Komplex Mk1 power - 12vAC or 9vDC?
#1
Komplex
Hello @9bar, @chrisi and the ladies & gentlemen of team Koma Elektonik.

I just bought a Komplex Mk1 with a serial # in the first 60; it was purchased from a user in the EU, and I'm in the USA - so the adapter the seller enclosed is unusable here.

The unit itself plainly states AC 12V where the adapter would plug in on the unit; no polarity is mentioned (as would be expected for AC).  However, the power supply listed on the site as being the correct one for the unit is 9v DC, 2A, center negative.

Did the power requirements change? Am I going to damage my unit by using what, to my non-electronics-engineer's eyes, looks like a different adapter than the unit's writing seems to indicate?

Separately - will the firmware continue to be updated on the Mk1's as well as the MK2's, and if so, are any feature enhancements or new capabilities being contemplated to add to the Mk1's?

And is there a timeline on when Mk1 owners can expect to see upgrade instructions to get the MK2 functionality?

Thanks a bunch, ladies & gents of Koma Elektronik!

Hey Danny, you are correct. The first two production runs of the Komplex Sequencer used a different power adapter, the 12VAC one. Unfortunately we are not allowed to buy and / or sell them in Europe because of missing CE marking. Back in the day, we actually bought a bunch of them and then the customs bureau threatened to destroy it at the border, so we had to send it back to the US!

Anyway, long story short: Buy this and that should do the trick: https://www.digikey.de/de/products/detai...00/5977832 In case, you want to find a better possibility, the part number for this adapter is: WAU120-1000

Hope that helps!

It does, thank you! Just as an FYI to anybody else who might be looking at this post, they are also available in the US via Amazon.

Given the potential for electrical damage, a note on the adapter order page about the different adapter used on early serial numbers might be worth consideration.

Thanks again -

Great! This information is to be found on the 'Manuals' tab of the Komplex Sequencer product page but maybe a note on the adapter page itself is in order. The real potential for damage is the reverse case though, where someones uses a 12VAC adapter for a 9VDC version...

As for the firmware, we will actively update the old and the new versions of the sequencers. We added some small changes and mainly did some code cleanup for some performance improvement. An upgrade of the MIDI transpose function requires hardware changes and we have yet to find a way to properly do that. We could always just hack a small electronics board in with lots of flying wires but we want to find a solution that will last over the years and not create more issues than it solves. So we are still looking into that and there is no current timeline until we have found a satisfying solution.
